This listing is for an unusual antique German Art Nouveau pewter mounted glass Claret jug/decanter, c.Although unmarked this decanter has all the features found on WMF items. If not made by WMF then certainly of equal quality and workmanship. Ornate pewter cased blown olive glass claret jug with unpolished pontil. Features two large cherub medallions on each side with two large oval cartouche medallions on front and back for monogram (unused). Elaborate stylized dragon figural handle with ball and claw end and goat head on front of spout.
Nicely detailed figural cherub finial on stopper. This fabulous decanter is in excellent condition with no scratches, chips, cracks or repairs. Measures 8 1/2" high (with stopper inserted) with a maximum width of 5 3/4" and base diameter of 3 1/2. The Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) Company was founded in 1880 in Geislingen, Germany. In the late 1800's, the company developed a special technique of silver plating that was considered the "perfect silver plate" using a technique that remained exclusive to WMF.
Their silver plating process was patented in 1892 and by 1910 the company employed over 4000 workers.
